DEBATE

Traditional Art vs. Digital Art

There has long been a debate on which medium and method is best for art creation. Even at Frame USA, our artists have vastly differing opinions on whether digital art is as effective as traditional, or if traditional is as well-worth the time as digital. In the end though, we all respect one another’s opinions and talents in their own medium, but this debate has spanned internet-wide among artists since as early as the first years of deviantART’s existance.

DEBATE

So why talk about it if artists have generally concluded that art is art, no matter the medium? Well, there are also some distinct differences when it comes to the display of the art. (Not to mention, both sides will always have strong opinions one way or the other.) Let’s find out how this affects framing!

With traditional art, there are a far greater number of variables to consider before framing your work. If the art is on paper, you’ll have to consider the materials of the art and the paper quality while working on presentation. In digital art, the only real consideration is in how you’ll print or display your piece.

The flip side is in the actual creation of the art – many prefer the precision and “messiness” that traditional media allows, where digital art allows for the correction of mistakes and the ability to make multiple immediate prints whenever you want.

Which do you prefer, and why? Leave a comment below to voice your opinion!

Framing Art – From Literal to Abstract

Framing has many different meanings and many uses as terminology, spanning from artistic photographs/photographic cropping, reflective framed surfaces, and of course, picture framing itself. Exploring the art of framing is diverse and complicated, but an interesting obervation of what framing has meant in the past and what it means today.

Set in the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, this exhibit aims to explore the meaning of framing in both a past and present sense. This exhibit is hosted by Cornell’s History of Art majors, showing that these students not only study the history behind the art, but the artistic perspective itself. You can find out more about Cornell and this gallery at the link provided below.

Selecting Art and Picture Frames for your Business

Choosing office decor may not be as simple as you think – interior decorating says volumes about your business.

For those with a business that sees plenty of through-traffic such as hotels, restaurants, marketing firms, cafes or studios: art and interior design are a major selling point of what your business entails.

Let’s start with the hotel example. Think of a time where you have stayed in a nice resort, or maybe a refreshing getaway where the artwork matched the theme of the surrounding environments. Of course, the focus of any average getaway hotel is ambience and design over the importance of displayed content, but the chosen wall decor of your business will undoubtedly be noticed at some point by your guests and clientele.

A design by Process5. This restaurant features interesting, but not distracting, artwork for guests to view while waiting for their meal. The large framed mirrors are meant to show off the food as art when brought to the table. See the full article here.

So what sorts of wall art would fit your company the most? Consider your target audience, and who will be viewing this art the most (aside from yourself, of course!) If you specialize in design or architecture, perhaps displaying blueprints and sketches would be a great way to capitalize on your wall space. For restaurants, photos of famous/local celebrities eating at your establishment make interesting conversation pieces. Other ideas include photos of the owner, the establishment during construction, group photos of your staff and visually interesting products that your business sells.

If your line of business doesn’t work with much imagery (and chances are, it does to some extent) you can always find related imagery to frame and display. For instance, if you are a dog groomer, you could post a fun bulletin board with pictures of various dogs you’ve groomed over the year. You could also post artistic images of barber salons, dog photography, or imagery that fits your brand. You don’t have to limit yourself to subject matter so long as the imagery supports the branding of your business in some way.

In closing, the decor of your business space is meant not only to demonstrate what your business is all about, but to help convert more sales. The customer or client is already in your office, so you don’t need to go to great lengths to impress them. Let your wall art and branding encourage them to trust you with their business.

Frame Collage meets Mobile Photography in new Kickstarter Campaign

A frame collage (Or “Gallery Wall”) is a HUGE recent trend in interior design. A recent Kickstarter campaign shows that, in framing, sometimes less is more.

We’ve talked a lot about frame collages in the past, and the great statement they can make when assembled in a tasteful manner. We’ve seen many of our customers take great advantage of this technique, from Bachelor winners to our tasteful twitter followers…

In recent news, however, we’ve found a great example of forward-thinking design for framing mobile photography. (Instagram lovers, this is for you!)

Meet the Fotobit: a modular framing system by Alan Yeung. This product allows you to place the frame on the wall using a single nail, balance the frame with a built-in leveler,  and attach the frame to other units to create an assmblage of frames. The concept is very modern and well-received–in fact, the Kickstarter has raised over $4,000 above the expected amount! With this trend in frame collage design on the rise, it’s obvious that this style of design is here to stay.

What are your thoughts on this new product? Let us know if you’re a fan of this modular-style frame, or what you’ve done to mimic this look! (We personally thing that our Architect series could handle the challenge!)
