Flag Day – Wednesday, June 14

Flag Day
Flag Day

While not an official federal holiday, Flag Day is celebrated every year on June 14th. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777.

June 14th was officially established as Flag Day by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. Similarly, the week of June 14th was appointed as National Flag Week. For the entirety of this week it is encouraged that citizens proudly fly their flag. Additionally, all government building will display the American flag during this week.

Fun Flag Facts

Five of the six American Flags that have been planted on the moon are still standing and the one that fell was knocked down due to the exhaust from the Apollo 11 takeoff.

In 1959 President Eisenhower chose a new design for the flag which was created in anticipation of Alaska and Hawaii becoming states and the design he chose came from Robert Heft who was a 17 year old high school student at the time.

Old Glory was the nickname of a specific American Flag which was owned by William Driver. He named it Old Glory in 1831 and the name went on to become synonymous with all American Flags.

Painting Frames
Painting Frames

Our Decorate-It Series is are painting frames with a flat profile that come in 3 different widths (1.5″, 2″ or 3″). It is created especially for crafting. You can paint it, glue on it, and use a wood burning pen, anything you can think of to decorate the frame.

Additionally, our Unfinished Series is another unfinished frame for painting (as the name might suggest). Like the Decorate It, the Unfinished series comes in 3 different profiles, but these are more decorative with some scoops and beveling in the frame. When painting a picture frame these can also be decorated in a classy way to help enhance the ascetics of your art.

Both our Unfinished and Decorate-It lines have the crafty folk in mind. These are great for both kids and adults alike, but you’ll definitely get your money’s work when you use these as kid’s craft projects. Tax Day

Tax Day

Today, Tuesday April 18th is known as Tax Day. This is the deadline where individual income tax returns are due to the government.

The idea of income tax began with the Revenue Act of 1861. This Act suggested that a tax should be placed on every US citizen due to the need to fund the Civil War. The Revenue Act of 1861 was signed and made a law by President Abraham Lincoln.

Tax Day usually occurs on April 15th but there are exceptions to this rule. For instance, in Washington DC they celebrate Emancipation Day the weekday closets to April 16th, so when the 15th occurs on a Friday, Tax Day takes place the approaching Monday. Now if the 15th happens on the weekend, Tax Day then exist on Tuesday, like it is this year.

April Charity of the Month: Visionaries and Voices

Visionaries and Voices
Visionaries and Voices

The concept for Visionaries + Voices emerged in 2001 when Keith Banner and Bill Ross curated an exhibition in Base Gallery for artists Paul Rowland, Richard Brown, Antonio Adams, and Raymond Thunder-Sky. Bill and Keith both worked for county boards serving individuals with disabilities and had met these artists in the course of their work. After that initial exhibition, more opportunities arose to organize shows and to present the work of artists with disabilities.

V+V now serves over 150 artists each week and presents 5 exhibitions per year in our Northside Gallery along with a growing number of exhibitions in wide variety of venues throughout the region and beyond. In 2004, Raymond Thunder-Sky passed away. His legacy is commemorated on the exterior wall of V+V’s Northside Studio in a mural designed by his friend Antonio Adams (this mural was completed and dedicated by ArtWorks in 2009). V+V has also developed a groundbreaking education program that provides artists who attend the studio opportunities to present their work and teach in community and classroom settings. The Teaching Artist Program (T.A.P.) now reaches over 6,000 students each year.

What began with a simple and ingenuous vision to create a space for artists with disabilities, has become the home for hundreds of artists to find their voice within the cultural landscape of Cincinnati.

To help with the vision, Frame USA will be donating to Visionaries and Voices in appreciation for your online order for the month of April.

Baseball Is Back — Opening Day 2017

MLB Opening Day
MLB Opening Day

Opening Day, typically occurring the first week of April, marks the beginning of baseball season for The MLB (Major League Baseball). This day is especially important for us in the city of Cincinnati seeing how The Cincinnati Reds were the Major Leagues first professional baseball team.

Originally the Cincinnati Base Ball Club, they were formed in 1866 and three years later became the first pro team by having ten players and all of them paid on salary.  The then Cincinnati Red Stockings had their first game on May 4th, 1869 which they went on to win 45-9! They continued on that season to 65 wins and zero losses, posting the first and only perfect season in the history of professional baseball.

Opening Day in Cincinnati is celebrated with the annual Findlay Market Parade. For multiple decades the first pitch of every MLB season happened in Cincinnati and the Reds are the only team to always play their first game at home.

Does your city glorify Opening Day in grand fashion? Let us know how you plan on honoring this unofficial holiday and what team you plan on watching the most of this season. Additionally, we’re offering 12% off all of our Wood Picture Frames in honor of the start of the 2018 Major League Baseball season.
