Almost everyone knows what picture frames are for—to protect, enhance and display a piece of artwork, a precious document, or a family portrait. That is not the only thing that picture frames can be used for. The uses for picture frames are endless. I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite unconventional uses for picture frames that I’ve seen around pinterest, television and even from customers!
1. Apartment Door Decoration using an Upcycled picture Frame
This use was something I had never thought of until I saw it on the TV Show Selfie. Use a decorative picture frame in shell form (without glass or backing) such as our Napoleon or American Value Silver frames on your door! You can also use a picture frame as a festive wreathe. Our Barnwood frames are perfect for a fall wreathe. This is perfect for apartments to make a door stand out among the sea of doors!
2. Upcycled Frame Collage Artwork
Picture frame collages with images in a bunch of different style of frames all painted one color to match but make a statement are very popular. This takes that idea but uses the picture frame shells as art itself! The different styles of our wood frames would be great for this idea.
3. Upcycled picture Frame turned Coffee Table
I don’t have a picture of this next one since it was an idea from a customer that she is planning on doing. She is planning on making a tabletop with a 2” thick frame to display seashells. She is substituting acrylic instead of glass and wooden dividers for the seashells and to support the acrylic. She figured out that this would be much cheaper than one of those coffee tables that are made for displays. Our Shadow box Elite comes in an unfinished profile which would be great for this so you can stain it and paint it in a color to match your décor.
4. Serving Tray using Upcycled Picture Frame
Who doesn’t love parties? Create a unique tray to serve food, drinks or bottles on. Using scrap book paper and acrylic glass in one of our frames. Our Victorian Picture Frames would be a beautiful conversation starter about where you got this vintage looking tray.
5. Nail Polish/Spice Rack using an Upcycled Picture Frame
This is perfect for the nail polish or food obsessed. Using a picture frame painted with the color of your choice or even just your favorite frame, for me it would be our Black Smoke Series and wood pieces adhered to the back to hold nail polish bottles or spice containers. This is both a piece of art and a handy storage system!
I hope my top 5 favorite unconventional uses for upcycled picture frames inspired the DIY crafter inside you. Show us your favorite upcycled picture frames!
As Christmas quickly approaches everyone is scrambling to get their gifts ordered and purchased so that they arrive on time. Buying presents online, although convenient, is a risky business to get into for Christmas, you never know if you’re going to get the gifts on time. Frame USA is all about life hacks (in case you don’t already know, check out part 1 & part 2 of our life hacks) so we’re going to make things extremely simple for you.
If you need Picture Frames or mats by Christmas, no matter where you are shipping them throughout the United States, your order needs to be placed by December 14th.
December is the only time where our standard 5-7 production time doesn’t apply. You will notice when you place your order and recieve the confirmation that it will say that it will arrive on or by Christmas Eve. We guarantee you with 100% certainty that you will receive your picture frame and mat orders on time if you order by the 14th.
If you would like to know the exact dates that we are shipping out orders, our full holiday shipping schedule can be viewed on our website here.
Since we have made your lives easier, we ask you to consider paying it forward this holiday season and making the life of someone else easier. How can you do this? Consider donating $1 to our charity initiative, Fill The Truck, when you place your orders this holiday season. That $1 will be going to 4 different charities that support those in need year round. $1 could buy you a plethora of items on a fast food restaurant’s dollar menu, but instead of spending it on that, give it to Fill The Truck so that we may help those that are in need!
Happy Shopping—May the odds be ever in your favor! (they will be when you shop with us!)
Framing is expensive and time consuming, with so many options it’s hard to find the right frame for the photograph or art that you are trying to frame. Having that piece be an odd size will make it even more expensive and time consuming.
There are so many online retailers out there that sell ready-made frames, including Frame USA, but very few that offer the option of purchasing completely custom made picture frames. Most online frame companies don’t offer the option because it’s hard! Custom framing by nature is so personal and requires a lot of back and forth between the customer and framer. There are so many options that are offered in your brick and mortar stores for custom framing, which are just not realistic for online companies.
We admit that the options available on our Build a Frame are nowhere near the options available in our retail frame shop, with that being said, Build a Frame is one of the best options for online custom picture framing on the market today, from our perspective in the industry as well as the feedback we’ve heard from customers who have used it.
I was curious how Build a Frame matched up, price wise, with your traditional brick and mortar retail custom framing, so I did some research. I thought I would share my results for those of you who are skeptical of our Build a Frame.
During my lunch this past Friday I took a field trip to two very well known frame shops here in Cincinnati. These two frame shops feature a lot of advertising and newspaper ads and are known for their crazy sales so I thought I would see how our Build A Frame Matched up to them.
I went to these two frame companies and ask for a custom framing quote for an 8×10 picture with a double mat in a simple 11×14 black picture frame. This is a standard picture frame size, but it is often used as the beginning of a custom order.
Here are the quotes:
Retail Custom Framing Competitor #1
When I went into this frame shop I was actually worried that my results would not work out in our favor— they had a huge sale going on where everything was 50% off and then you were able to take an additional 30% off that sale price. The price for my 8×10 picture with a double mat in an 11×14 black picture frame with standard glass backing and assembly which included a wire hanger was $75.62. I saved a total of $131.56; I don’t want to imagine what the cost would be without that sale.
Retail Custom Framing Competitor #2
My lunch time was coming to an end rapidly so I decided for this next shop that I was going to call and get a quote. The price for my 8×10 picture with a double mat in an 11×14 black picture frame with standard glass backing and assembly which included a wire hanger was starting at $70. That means that there is a chance that it could go up depending which picture frame molding I went with.
So using Build A Frame I priced out myself exactly what I asked the two frame shops for. Since this is an Online Custom Framing tool the convenience of not having to stand in lines or even leave your pajama is there. The total including shipping and tax since I was shipping it to my home in Cincinnati was $51.23 without the tax for those of you who are not having it shipped to somewhere in ohio would be $47.99
Using Build A Frame would save me around $24.39. Want to know what you could buy with $24.39?
Miracle Berry Tablets—alter your taste buds for an hour so anything sour tastes sweet
LifeStraw- drink from any water source and have filtered clean water to drink from
Rock-It— it turns just about any surface into a speaker
Bubble-Calendar— a calendar made from bubble wrap that you get to pop every day
A new pair of shoes
Two Chipotle Burritos
I could go on but the point is not only does Build A Frame have all the convenience of shopping online ( no lines, no leaving your bed) but it also saves you money, So unless you have a really complex custom framing job, give Build A Frame a chance, it won’t disappoint you, or your wallet!
Posters are a great way to decorate your bedrooms but we often see people struggling to know how to frame posters. We thought we would help everyone out and give you our suggestions on framing posters! Spoiler Alert: We have a sale on poster frames going on right now, coupon code and more information about the sale are at the bottom of this post!
There are two things that make framing posters so difficult: The Size and the cheap poster prices. Posters are generally large; the standard poster sizes are typically 24×36 and larger. It will come to no surprise to you that large picture frames are going to be more expensive than small frames. So we thought we would give you our products that will make framing posters quick and easy. We have separated out our suggestions based on the age of the recipient.
framing a poster for Young Children:
When it comes to framing posters for children you want to keep it as inexpensive as possible because they are so young and their tastes in things change so rapidly. They may decide that the movie Frozen is there favorite thing in the whole world one minute and then decide the next that their favorite thing in the whole world is actually My Little Pony.
You also have to be worried about safety when it comes to hanging large pieces in your children’s room.
This series is made of Mylar which is a thin plastic channel with colored film on it. The sides of the poster frame slide off and back on for easy assembling. This series is one that will fit in every single group because it is so simple. They are available in all standard poster frame sizes.
FRAMING A POSTER FOR Teenagers:
This group has a pretty wide range of ages in it so there is more options for framing posters.
As mentioned above, our corrugated series is great for all ages, especially young children and teenagers. Another perk of the corrugated series for your older children is that they don’t need help assembling the frame. They can change out their poster choices easily with the slide off strips.
The kids in the middle of this age group are beginning to get more solidified interests and may want to have a sturdier frame. We suggest considering our Foam Core Series. This series is similar to the Corrugated poster frame Series with one difference, instead of cardboard backing it comes with a much sturdier Foam Core Backing.
For kids at the top of this age group, they know their interests, they are thinking about college and life after high school. You want something that makes their room feel like their own space, and give them the option of having something inexpensive but incredibly sturdy. We have a third option in our Mylar Poster Frame Series called The Hardboard Poster Frame Series. This series is perfect for kids who have posters that must last (until they get to college and completely change their interests). Our Hardboard Posterframes are cheap poster frames with an incredibly sturdy backing.
FRAMING A POSTER FOR College Kids:
The three posterframes mentioned above definitely still apply to these kids because college kids are rough and things break so why not give them a cheap poster framing option. Our Corrugated Series is probably the most popular with the dorm crowd because it’s light weight and can be hung using poster mounts on dorm walls.
For the kids that want a little bit more elegance for their apartments and dorm rooms we offer two affordable poster frames that have an elegant flair to them. Our Deluxe poster frames and Budget Saver Poster Frame Series are made from polystyrene which is hard plastic frame that is lightweight. They feature a more prominent molding to be a conversation piece in their home away from home.
FRAMING A POSTER FOR Adults:
For those that have graduated college and/or have been in the workforce for quite some time you know what you like, and you have a more flexible budget when it comes to framing posters. You could always go with your traditional black wood frames, but if you still want cheap frames for posters than you will be very interested in our newest posterframe picture frame line. Our Simply Poly Series has all the style of a classic wood picture frame moulding but it’s made out of the same material as our Deluxe and Budget Saver so it should be high on your list of cheap framing options!
We absolutely love Simply Poly here in the office because they are so durable, and versatile but still have such an elegance that none of our other posterframes posses.
Want to know the best part about all of these suggestions? Right now you can get them for 10% off!
Starting today until November 17th at midnight you can get any of our posterframes on Frameusa.com for 10% off the listed price using the coupon code WHITEBOARD. Add that to your list of cheap framing options and you got yourself beautifully framed posters for cheap!
As your children turn from kids to adults, buying them presents for the holidays or birthdays can become a difficult task. They become far less easy to please and far more expensive to shop for. You may have given up the fight and settled with money, gift cards or clothing (that they will probably end up returning for the money). We thought that we would end this madness and give you a few gift ideas that will guarantee make your kids cry or at least give you a really big hug! The best part about these gifts are you most likely will have almost every one of them, and with the help of Frameusa.com you won’t even have to leave your house this Black Friday because you will be all set for your presents.
1. Frame ticket stubs and program from an event you experienced together.
Almost all kids will attend concerts and/or plays that impacted them greatly in some way. By framing them you are providing your children with someplace to not only protect those precious ticket stubs and play bills but to display them as well. We have three types of shadow box picture frames that you can choose from: Shadow box Boxers, Shadow Box Showcase and Shadow Box Elite. All of which come in our standard sizes. Just like all of our other picture frames our Shadow Box frames are back loading. This will allow for your children to put in their precious ticket stubs and play bills, close up the frame to display and then add more ticket stubs and play bills as they receive them! Only have one particular show that was special? Just frame those elements with Build a Frame
2. Frame your child’s favorite childhood toy
Our picture frames come in variety of depths so they will accommodate everything from a puzzle all the way up to a matchbox car or train. If the toy itself is rather thick I suggest looking at our shadow box picture frames. They range in depth from a little over 1 inch all the way up to 3.5 inches
3. Take a childhood “Blankey” and frame it
You can Use the aforementioned shadow box picture frames and have the blanket sewn onto black foam core. The other option is to unfold the blanket and frame it in a traditional wood frame.
4. Combine your child’s catcher’s mitt or dance shoes with a picture of them in the uniform/costume
Take your child’s equipment and find a photo of them wearing it. Use our Shadow Box Showcase picture frame and combine them for a meaningful gift.
5. Turn your childhood’s art piece into a masterpiece
We can take a copy of your child’s artwork and turn it into a plaque that can be hung on a wall. For more information about the plaque process, click here! A Plaque is a great picture frame alternative that allows for you to protect your pieces but in a simple inexpensive way!
6. Frame a memento from an important life experience
You can use Build a Frame and choose beautiful mats and high quality made in the USA picture frames to turn that moment into a lasting memory.
7. Framed pennies from the birth year of each of your family members
These can be especially wonderful to use as a gift for your grown children, especially those that have new families of their own. Once you have the pennies you can lay them out however you please, in a more artistic way such as in a family tree style, or a simpler layout such as a straight line.
8. Frame a map of your home state or city
If you’re really crafty you can do something spectacular to the map, but for those of you that are like me, all you need is an image of a map, scissors and a made in the USA picture frame.
9. Framed Image of Childhood Home
We suggest turning it into more of an artistic style photographs using an online generators.
10. Frame a family letter
The easiest gift of all is simply writing your child a meaningful letter letting them know how much you love them, and are proud of them and getting it framed
After hearing of the topic of this blog, one of our employee’s shared with us a personal experience that really showed us that these gifts really do mean the world to our children. With approval of this employee we thought we would share her story with you to show that this really is a worthwhile post and is not just an attempt on our part to push our products.
“My senior year of college I was required to go through a portfolio show in which I displayed my portfolio to friends, family and professors. All of the projects in it were an accumulation of my 4 years at school and it was extremely important to me. My mom took the postcard invitation that was sent out about the show and got it framed for me. This simple gift that my mom gave me serves as a daily reminder of my accomplishments and I cherish it deeply.”
Giving your child (or anyone for that matter) a worthwhile gift isn’t about how much you spend or how trendy it is, it’s about coming up with something that makes that person feel cherished. That is why these gifts that we gave you are so effective; they will make your child see that what is important to them is important to you.

How do you frame a canvas? Can you frame an oil painting? These common questions and more are answered in this week’s top 5 questions!
1. What looks best with black and white photographs?
This is a question we receive quite often, and one that’s best discovered with a good amount of experimentation. In the end, the answer will vary based on how much of a value scale your image has. If it’s darker, you may want a lighter frame to showcase the darks. If there’s more white space, a black picture frame will make the piece more visually striking. A good in-between is silver, particularly our Vernona Wide (or narrow if you prefer) Tarnished Silver. In fact, we recently used this to frame a custom order for one of our contest winners. He loved it, as did his family and friends:
2. What frame pairs well with black and white drawing / pen and ink?
A good pairing for black and white art does fall under the same advice as photography, however, an art piece can generally be seen as more striking in a standard black frame. Pen and ink can really be framed in any color, though, depending on the theme of your work. For instance, a simple drawing of the ocean or rain storm could look perfect in a frame with blue hues (Clean Cute for instance.) Another idea is to go with a more textured frame like Carbon Fiber if your piece is a bit more cacophonous.
3. What frames are used for canvas displays?
Our best frames for the job include Floater Frames and our In-Depth series. Floater is one of our most recent art frames – made specifically for the purpose of displaying canvas artwork. You can see how these frames look in action below:
4. How do you frame an oil painting?
As with the above response, Most paintings and canvas work will fit best inside of a Floater or In-Depth picture frame. These are our deepest frames and offer the best look for those times you want your painting inside of a frame. Glass is not included with a Floater frame if you’re buying from us, but that’s a fairly standard method of display within the art industry.
5. Which picture frame material is right for me?
Finally, another question we hear often is “Which frame is right for me?” It’s an understandable question when you see how many we have! Wood, metal, shadow box, poster frames, acryllic easels… The honest answer is, you have to find out on your own! Learn whether the room you are presenting in will have a lot of glare, or if that’s even a concern of yours. Know whether or not real wood or eco-friendly wood is important to you. There are plenty of options to choose from most of those choices are situational. Have a look at our past blog posts on choosing the right frame. Our YouTube channel can also help!
