What should I take into consideration when choosing backing?

Table-top

Ready-made frames smaller than 9”x12” typically come with an easel back. An easel allows the frame to be displayed on a flat surface, such as a desk or table. Moulding with an especially wide or deep profile may cause an easel to not lie flat against the back of the frame. This can cause the retail display of such frames to be more cumbersome than usual. It also restricts the frame from being hung on a wall, as it will not be flush with the surface of the wall. Frame USA does not currently offer easels in frames larger than 8”x12”.

Walls

Hanging the frames on a wall is the most common way to display sizes larger than 8”x12”.

Cardboard

The least expensive backing for wall hanging is corrugated cardboard.
Cardboard is suitable for framing items that are purely decorative. It offers the least resistance against moisture and the cellulose content of cardboard creates an attractive home for mold. When hanging a frame in a moisture rich area, such as a basement, cardboard is not recommended.

Foam Core

The next step up in quality is foam core backing. Foam core consists of two layers of paperboard between which is a layer of rigid foam. It offers increased moisture protection and is available in either regular or acid free. Foam core can also be used to line shadowboxes. It is typically white, but is also available in black.
Frame USA currently stocks only regular black and white foam core. To inquire about the availability of acid free foam core, please contact customer service.

Consider the Value of the Item

Cardboard is an excellent backing for the basic framing project. However, for items of considerable sentimental or monetary value, a more protective backing is in order. Acid free foam core offers lasting stability and does not contain the damaging acids, which cause paper and fabric to yellow. The yellowing process may take a long time to become noticeable, but it is definitely a consequence worth considering.

Easel backs are not acid free. Placing an acid free material between the framed item and the easel will help protect the item.
